According to Sociolinguistic Survey of Northern Pakistan, conducted by the department of National Institute of Pakistan Studies, Qaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad and SIL International the name Chilisso comes from Chiliss Khel, a clan name of those who speak this language. The speakers of Chilisso live in the midst of the majority Shina-speaking population.

This language is spoken by relatively a small number of people in scattered locations on the east bank of the Indus River in District Kohistan. Only a few thousand people speak this language actively. Most of them are found in Jalkot area. What to worry about this language is not all people from the Chiliss Khel speak the language today.
