Belonging to the Kohistani group, the Bateri language is spoken in Batera, which is in the southern region of the Kohistan district along the east bank of the Indus River. According to the Population Census, the Federal Government of Pakistan conducted in 2017, the total recorded number of people in Batera Union Council (UC) was 18,000. Since Batera UC is also populated by people other than Bateri speakers, therefore the figure of Bateri speakers is estimated to be up to 15,000. This statistic has been provided by a Bateri researcher, Mr. Muhammad Baqi who has been collecting data about his native language since long, and he has recently started his another research work collaborating with an international researcher. He has refined only Bateri speakers from the entire population data of the census and come to this conclusion. Some speakers of Bateri are also found in India, and more than 2000 Bateri speakers were reported to be there in 2010, however no updated data is available. So far, the language lacks a functional writing system and FLI started its documentation services for Bateri in 2021 conducting a language vitality survey where it was found to be vulnerable in all three domains; identity, orality and literacy. Based on this survey, some activities have been planned to strengthen the language which are hoped to lead the language to a proper documentation.
